Signs of a differential problem.

If you notice any of these, have it checked before it does more damage:

  • Whining or howling from underneath when you accelerate
  • A whirring noise when you slow down
  • A rumble you feel or hear when turning corners
  • Odd vibrations while accelerating or turning
  • Uneven wear on the tires
  • Grinding gears

Three levels of repair.

Soft overhaul

Often all that's needed. The differential is overhauled with a complete bearing kit: shims, axle seals and bearings.

Complete overhaul

Everything in a soft overhaul plus a new ring and pinion gear set, and a carrier assembly and supporting parts if the job calls for them.

Re-gearing

For vehicles on oversized tires. A lower gear ratio takes excess load off the transmission and the rest of the driveline.

Warranty

2 years or 24,000 miles on every differential repair, plus free annual maintenance for as long as you own the vehicle.

Differential questions.

Updated October 2026.

What does a differential do?
It lets the wheels on an axle turn at different speeds. When you take a corner, the outside wheel has to travel farther than the inside one. A differential that isn't doing its job quickly causes trouble for the wheels, axles and transmission.
Does a noisy differential always need a full rebuild?
No. Caught early, it can be as simple as replacing the differential oil, and many jobs only need a soft overhaul with a new bearing kit. The free diagnostic tells you which one you're looking at.
Why re-gear a truck with bigger tires?
Oversized tires change the effective gear ratio and put extra load on the whole driveline. Re-gearing lowers the ratio to take that strain off the transmission. It's most common on diesels.
