Maintenance and repair.
Lubrication and fluid
Low fluid or lost lubrication causes serious damage. Levels get checked and topped up on every visit.
Leak checks
Even a small leak can be catastrophic in these systems. Fixing it early can prevent a complete rebuild.
Transfer cases
The transfer case routes power from the transmission to the front and rear differentials, in both 4WD and AWD. It's checked for proper operation and serviced.
Locking hubs
Front locking hubs turn the front wheels into drive wheels in 4WD and free them in 2WD for better mileage and less tire wear. They're inspected and serviced.
4x4 and AWD questions.
Updated October 2026.
- What's the difference between 4WD and AWD?
- Four-wheel drive, common on trucks and SUVs for towing and off-road use, sends torque to all four wheels and is often switched on when needed. All-wheel drive is always working, with the transaxle, transfer case, rear differential and ABS system managing traction in all weather.
- How often should a transfer case be serviced?
- It should be checked and serviced regularly. Even a small leak can be serious in these systems, and fixing a minor leak early can save a complete rebuild.
